History

Those of European descent first arrived in the late 17th century to establish farms in the area. After the conclusion of the Revolutionary War, the arrival of more industry changed the complexion of the region. Soon thereafter, in the 1820s, the Morris Canal significantly improved transportation in the area. Mules were able to tow boats through the canal that weighed as much as 50 tons. Eventually, the hand-dug canal would extend for a distance of over a hundred miles.

The Upper Montclair Country Club in Clifton was one of A.W. Tillinghast’s creations from over a century ago. Later, another famous golf course architect, Robert Trent Jones, Sr., was enlisted to redesign and update the historic layout. Upper Montclair Country Club is the only facility to have hosted professional events on the LPGA, PGA and Champions golf tours. Jackie Gleason, Babe Ruth and Arnold Palmer have all teed it up at this historic golf course.

Events

Clifton’s Avenue of Flags is set up along roads at the Clifton Arts Center for Patriot Day, Independence Day, Flag Day, Memorial Day and Veterans’ Day.
